Motorcyclist killed in I-77 crash in Richland County

Authorities said the other driver involved in the northbound crash wasn't injured.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A motorcyclist who was taken to the hospital after a Friday morning accident on a major Richland County section of interstate highway has died.

According to Corporal Tyler Tidwell with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, around 7:30 a.m., a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle was heading north on I-77 roughly one mile east of Columbia when the crash happened.

Tidwell said the motorcycle rear-ended a 2017 Jeep Wrangler and the rider spilled into the roadway. The rider was taken to an area hospital but ultimately died.

While the initial report does say both vehicles were headed in the same direction, it doesn't suggest what led to the motorcycle hitting the back of the other vehicle.

Investigators said the other motorist wasn't injured in the crash. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is handling the ongoing investigation.
