FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have identified a 70-year-old man who was killed in an interstate highway crash in Fairfield County on Tuesday.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened just after 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday along I-77 southbound on the exit 34 ramp outside of Ridgeway, South Carolina.
Police said a 58-year-old man from North Carolina was driving a Mack semi truck south on the exit ramp when he struck the pedestrian. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fairfield County Coroner Chris Hill has since identified the victim as 70-year-old Chavis G. Burton of Huntersville, North Carolina. The coroner's office said that Burton was trying to cross the roadway when he was hit, but no additional information about how the crash occurred has been released.
Both the coroner's office and Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the crash.
