COLUMBIA, S.C. — Motorists be aware, South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has announced it will be closing a portion of Interstate 126 overnight for planned bridge construction as part of the Carolina Crossroads Project, Phase 1. Here are the details:
When: Beginning at 11 p.m. tonight (Thursday, March 7) and reopening 2 a.m. Friday, March 8, and again on at 11 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, to 2 a.m. Thursday, March 14
What: I-126 westbound between Elmwood Avenue and Colonial Life Boulevard will be closed. Also, around 12:30 a.m., eastbound traffic on I-126 will be stopped for approximately 20 minutes as a precaution while the beams are set in place.
Westbound detour: Law enforcement vehicles will slow down traffic traveling westbound and direct them to the detour at Colonial Life Boulevard. Motorists will then follow the signs to Bush River Road and back to I-126
Why: SCDOT needs to safely transport and set new bridge beams in their permanent locations
SCDOT says the exact timing of the closures is subject to change, based on construction progress and weather conditions. Motorists are asked to be patient, expect delays and use caution when driving through construction zones.
