Overturned propane truck causes detours, evacuation in Orangeburg County

Traffic along Hwy 389 will be diverted until the site is cleared Wednesday, Dec. 4

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A fully-loaded propane truck overturned Wednesday morning near the town of Neeses, in Orangeburg County.

Bill Staley, Director of Orangeburg County Emergency Management Services, said the incident happened around 7:30 a.m. on SC Highway 389 (Ninety 6 Road), about one mile from the town. The driver was taken to the hospital.

South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has set up traffic detours in the area and there has been an evacuation ordered for a half-mile area surrounding the site, as a precaution, Staley said.

The propane leak has been stopped and, Staley said, emergency crews are working with the propane company to off-load the truck and clear the site. "This will be an all-day event," he said.

Motorists and residents in the area are asked to use caution in the area until the cleanup is completed.
