RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A crash on I-77 near Fort Jackson left one person dead and another injured on Saturday, authorities confirmed later in the day.

Corporal Tyler Tidwell with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said that just after 5:30 a.m. a pedestrian was hit by a 2015 Nissan Murano. Preliminary details suggest the vehicle was heading north on I-77 between the Fort Jackson Boulevard and Strom Thurmond Boulevard/Forest Drive exits when it struck a person who was in the roadway.

The crash killed the pedestrian and the driver of the Nissan, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was taken to Prisma Baptist Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries.

The pedestrian has not been identified by the Richland County Coroner's Office and authorities haven't said why the person may have been on the road at the time.
