RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say a pedestrian has died after being struck by a tractor-trailer early Thursday morning.
According to Master Trooper David Jones, the crash happened around 3:30 a.m. on I-20 east near mile marker 68. This is near the Monticello Road exit.
Authorities haven't elaborated on why the pedestrian was in the roadway but said the person was struck by a 2020 Freightliner tractor-trailer. The driver of the truck was wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured. However, the pedestrian was pronounced dead.
As per protocol, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash, routinely defers to the county coroner's office for identification of the victim.
