Fatal crash near Pinewood in Sumter County under investigation as authorities examine the circumstances of the incident resulting in one death.

SUMTER, S.C. — Authorities are investigating a serious accident that happened just after noon on Saturday and left one person dead.

According to Lance Corporal Lena Butler with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 12:35 p.m. on Secondary 51, also known as Camp Mac Boykin Road, near St. Mark Church Road - roughly three miles west of Pinewood. Butler said that the crash involved a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck and a 2003 Chevrolet Impala.

Based on preliminary information provided by investigators, Butler said that Impala was heading south on Secondary 51 when it traveled off the right side of the road, overcorrected, and crossed the center line, colliding with the Colorado pickup truck.

The driver of the Impala, who has not yet been publicly identified by the Sumter County Coroner's Office, died at the scene. The driver of the Colorado pickup truck was airlifted to a Prisma Health hospital. That person's condition was not readily known.

Butler said the crash is still under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
