What's going on with Carolina Crossroads Project? SCDOT to give update at community meeting

Drop-in meeting will be at Dutch Square Center Tuesday, April 9

COLUMBIA, S.C. — You see the construction along I-26 and I-20 in Columbia on a daily basis -- the  lane diversions and earth-moving heavy equipment in and around the area commonly called Malfunction Junction is actually part of South Carolina Department of Transportation's (SCDOT) Carolina Crossroads Project

As work on the $2 billion project continues, SCDOT will be hosting a public meeting 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, on the progress of the project and what commuters might expect this summer. The drop-in event at Dutch Square Center, 421 Bush River Rd., will give attendees a chance to view display maps and videos of the re-phasing of the project and ask questions of Carolina Crossroads Project team members.

This latest meeting follows the February 2024 announcement that upcoming phases of the project would advance interstate widening projects on I-20 and improvements to the I-126 and I-26 interchange while utility coordination and project development continues in the main interchange area.

SCDOT says over the summer, the re-phasing plan of the project will continue to be refined.

Originally partitioned into five different phases, Phases 1 and 2 of the project continue to progress along I-126 at Colonial Life Boulevard and I-20 at the Broad River Road interchange respectively. According to SCDOT, this project is the largest undertaking in the South Carolina transportation industry, followed by the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston.

So far, 14 miles of interstate are being reconfigured to alleviate congestion along the interstate in the Midlands.

More information is available on SCDOT's Carolina Crossroads Project site.
