COLUMBIA, S.C. — Motorists who usually commute or have business on South Main Street, directly behind the South Carolina State House should be aware of a change in traffic patterns beginning the evening of April 22.
South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is beginning Phase 2 of the South Main Street Streetscape Project and will be shifting vehicle traffic west toward the Assembly Street side, with one lane in each direction open for motor vehicle traffic. SCDOT crews will be installing curbs, sidewalks, driveways, and drainage structures on the east side of South Main, closest to Sumter Street.
Median construction on Pendleton Street will also begin during Phase 2, and SCDOT will announce how and when traffic will be affected as that work begins.
Businesses on both sides of South Main Street will continue to be accessible. SCDOT asks the traveling public to use caution in and around this active work zone.
The South Main Street Streetscape Project is a collaborative effort with the State of South Carolina, City of Columbia, Richland County, and University of South Carolina. The project is supposed to improve pedestrian safety and enhance the appearance of South Main, along the four blocks between Blossom and Pendleton streets.
