KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) announced it will be replacing or rehabilitating three bridges on I-20 in Kershaw County that span the Wateree River.
Modern bridges are typically designed with a service life between 50 to 75 years, according to SCDOT. To maintain and preserve the service life of bridges, typical bridge treatments include concrete deck repairs, steel painting, and resealing expansion joints.
The Kershaw County bridges in question are nearing the end of their service life and with this project, SCDOT will ensure this stretch of interstate will remain operational. Design work should begin this year and construction should follow in 2024. One existing bridge will be replaced and the two twin bridges on I-20 eastbound and westbound over the Wateree River will be rehabilitated.
SCDOT has been working to rehabilitate and replace hundreds of aging bridges in South Carolina since 2018 as a part of the agency's strategic plan to improve the state's transportation infrastructure.
