PELION, S.C. — Police say a driver has died following a high-speed crash in Pelion that investigators believe was alcohol-related.

According to Pelion Police Chief John Rebolj, the crash happened just after 2 p.m. on Main Street near Pelion Road and the police department headquarters. Rebolj said the driver came into town at high speed on U.S. 178 and was traveling well over the 35 mph speed limit when the vehicle left the roadway.

Rebolj said no other person or vehicle was involved in the crash. The driver was removed from the wreckage and taken to an area hospital but later died, he said. He said the collision could have been even more tragic given the proximity to a nearby park where people sometimes gather.

Investigators said items in the vehicle led them to believe alcohol was a possible determining factor in the crash.

Pelion Police continue to investigate the incident. The department deferred to the Lexington County Coroner's Office for the name of the deceased.

The roadway has since reopened.
