Myrtle Beach woman, 66, hit and killed by police truck on beach

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is looking into the crash and Horry County Police are conducting an internal investigation.

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have identified a Myrtle Beach woman who was struck and killed by a police vehicle on Thursday afternoon.

Lance Corporal Lena Butler with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened on Thursday around 1 p.m. near Nash Street north of Myrtle Beach. Butler said a 2020 Ford Ranger pickup truck was heading north from Nash Street onto private property when it struck a pedestrian. The victim was taken to Grand Strand Medical Center and died, Butler said. Nash Street runs adjacent to a public beach access.

A spokesperson for the Horry County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 66-year-old Sandra "Sandy" Schultz-Peters.

Lance Corporal Butler didn't provide additional information about the crash but said troopers are still investigating it.

The Horry County Police Department later confirmed that the vehicle in the crash belonged to them and that the officer involved in the crash had been placed on leave. In addition to the South Carolina Highway Patrol's investigation, Horry County police said they were conducting an internal probe of the incident.

“What occurred on the beach yesterday was a tragedy, and we know our community is hurting. Our hearts are with all those impacted by this loss," police said in Friday's statement. "We also know our community has questions. We do, too."
