Sumter County coroner identifies woman hit by deputy's vehicle

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have released the name of a woman who was hit and killed while attempting to cross a Sumter County highway on Friday.

According to the Sumter County Coroner's Office, 63-year-old Janet Wilson of Sumter was hit by a Sumter County deputy who was traveling in the area.

She was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey where she was pronounced dead.

The coroner and the South Carolina Highway Patrol's Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are now investigating the crash and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Records show the crash happened around 2 p.m. in the area of Pocalla Road (U.S. Highway 15) near Manning Avenue.

According to Master Trooper David Jones, Wilson was in the median attempting to cross the street when she stepped out and "struck the side of" a 2018 Ford Explorer.

Additional details have not yet been released as the investigation continues.
