Motorcyclist dies following head-on crash with truck in Sumter County; coroner releases identity

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash.

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say a motorcyclist has died after crashing into a truck while riding in oncoming lanes on Friday.

Corporal David Jones with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened around noon on U.S. 378 (Myrtle Beach Highway) near Brewington Road. Jones said a 1990 Honda motorcycle was traveling east in the westbound lanes when it collided with a 1985 Oshkosh commercial truck.

The rider of the motorcycle, later identified as 73-year-old Ray Prosser of Florence County, died at the scene of the crash. Jones said the driver of the truck wasn't injured.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash. Coroner Robbie Baker said an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
