They mean it when they say 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over'

The S.C. Highway Patrol will coordinate with South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia law enforcement to conduct safety checkpoints through the Labor Day holiday.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Motorists in South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia should take to heart the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign law enforcement is running through Labor Day, Sept. 2, this year. 

Law enforcement agencies in these three states are coordinating efforts in the days leading up to this year's holiday weekend to conduct safety checkpoints aimed at keeping drunk and drugged drivers off the roads.

South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) has announced that the Highway Patrol and partners within the South Carolina Law Enforcement Network (SCLEN)—local police and sheriff's departments—will participate in the Hands Across the Border activities that are part of South Carolina's Sober or Slammer! campaign.

Multi-state announced checkpoints will be active at these dates, starting at 8 p.m.:

  • Sunday, Aug. 25: South Carolina and North Carolina, US-17 in Horry County, at the North Carolina state line 
  • Monday, Aug. 26: South Carolina and North Carolina, US-15 in Marlboro County, at the North Carolina state line
  • Tuesday, Aug. 27: South Carolina and North Carolina, US-321 in York County, at the North Carolina state line
  • Wednesday, Aug. 28: South Carolina and Georgia, US-29 in Anderson County, at the Georgia state line
  • Wednesday, Aug. 28: South Carolina and North Carolina, SC-18 in Cherokee County, at the North Carolina state line
  • Wednesday, Aug. 28: South Carolina and North Carolina, US-221 in Cherokee County, at the North Carolina state line
  • Wednesday, Aug. 28: South Carolina and North Carolina, SC-14/Landrum Road in Spartanburg County, at the North Carolina state line
  • Thursday, Aug. 29, South Carolina and Georgia, US-17/Talmadge Bridge in Jasper County, at the Georgia state line

In 2023, SCDPS reported seven people killed in roadway accidents over the Labor Day holiday period of Sept. 1 through Sept. 4, 2023, and 10 fatalities during the 2022 Labor Day holiday period.
