COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has announced it will begin shifting traffic along Garners Ferry and Leesburg roads in anticipation of closing I-77 southbound lanes on Friday, April 14.
SCDOT is closing the southbound lanes of I-77 between the on-ramp of I-77 at I-26 and Exit 5/Bluff Road to replace the bridge decks over the Congaree River.
To help alleviate the congestion that will be caused by re-routing motorists, SCDOT is altering the traffic patterns for Garners Ferry and Leesburg roads entering I-77 northbound. Here's what is changing:
- the cut-through from Garners Ferry to Leesburg (the turn lane at Greenlawn Cemetery) will be closed
- westbound traffic on Garners Ferry will access I-77 northbound (to Charlotte) by going up one block and turning right onto Leesburg and then left onto the I-77 northbound ramp.
SCDOT will close I-77 southbound Friday evening and is expected to reopen in 9 days, weather permitting.
Motorists should use caution and obey the detour signs.
