COLUMBIA, S.C. — The state of South Carolina is crisscrossed with miles and miles of railroad tracks with freight trains and passenger trains running throughout the day and night. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is working on a long-term vision, the Statewide Rail Plan, to improve freight and passenger train travel and is asking the public for input on the plan.

SCDOT is seeking opinions on the future of the state's rail system from passenger and freight rail operators, Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), Council of Governments (COGs), neighboring states' transportation departments, and the public at large. The agency wants to access the existing statewide rail system and identify ways to enhance rail safety and expand rail service.

For background, you can watch one of the Rail Plan Advisory Commission's early presentations and/or go over the slide presentation by SCDOT. You can also fill out the SC State Rail Plan Survey to express your concerns before the virtual meeting. The deadline to complete the form is June 21.
