RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating following a wrong-way crash on I-77 in Richland County that left one of three drivers dead.
According to Lance Corporal Nick Pye, the crash happened around 5 a.m. on Saturday in the northbound lanes near mile marker 19 - not far from South Carolina 277.
Preliminary details suggest a 2006 Toyota SUV was heading south in the northbound lanes when it struck a 2018 Peterbilt Tractor Trailer and a 2021 Nissan sedan. The crash sent the tractor-trailer into the guardrail where it caught fire.
The crash resulted in the death of the wrong-way driver and injuries for the drivers of the tractor-trailer and sedan. It's unclear how severe their injuries were.
The deceased victim's name has not yet been released by the Richland County Coroner's Office.
