COLUMBIA, S.C. — As the nation gears up for Independence Day, many Americans are hitting the road or taking to the skies to reach their holiday destinations. AAA forecasts that travel numbers will reach unprecedented levels this year, with an estimated 3.5 million more travelers than last year.
"The traffic has been fairly good. It's been tight in spots, but I suspect the closer we get to Charleston in Folly Beach, we will run into some more tight traffic," one traveler said, making his way from Greenville to Folly Beach with family.
AAA projects that a record 60.6 million people will travel by car this Independence Day, marking an increase of 2.8 million travelers from the previous year. Tiffany Write, AAA's Director of Public Affairs, emphasized the significant travel period ahead: "It's going to be a busy holiday travel period. People have already begun their vacations as early as last weekend."
Write advised travelers to avoid driving during peak hours, particularly between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., highlighting congestion around major metro areas and popular attractions like theme parks and beaches.
Not only are record numbers hitting the road, but the skies are also experiencing a surge in travel. "We have seen a 7% increase in air travel," Write also noted the need for travelers to plan ahead by recommending that people arrive at airports earlier than usual due to increased activity.
"With airports being so busy right now, I would recommend arriving two hours before your domestic flight and three hours before an international flight," Write said, suggesting additional padding to ensure sufficient time.
For those hitting the road, AAA anticipates providing aid to 20-30 thousand vehicles in the Carolinas alone this holiday week. They urge travelers to prepare with essentials like a first aid kit, water, and food in case of emergencies before embarking on their trips.
