COLUMBIA, S.C. — This morning, some of the impact this world wide internet outage was having in the Carolinas.
The problem that began late Thursday evening affected everything from banking to airlines.
Around 6 a.m., News19 heard from Kim Crafton who is in charge of Communications at Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE). She says airlines there are checking in passengers but flights are grounded until further notice.
Just after 11 a.m. Friday, CAE updated that as of 10 a.m., the ground stop of airport traffic had been lifted and flights in Columbia had resumed.
"We were supposed to fly out at 5:15 this morning and land at 1:08 in the afternoon at home, and now we're flying out tomorrow at 4 something pm, so it's we're spending an extra day here, we got here at 3 in the morning and found out our flights were canceled, so we're just kinda hanging out, it hasn't been that bad I'll be honest with you because my daughter shes flying out and we had to see her one more time," said traveler Cheryl Justice.
Passengers are encouraged to use their airline's mobile app to stay updated on possible delays. CAE will update the airport status in Columbia as details become available.
The outage that started Thursday evening has affected global travel. The FAA said the airlines United, American, Delta and Allegiant had all been grounded, leaving travelers stranded at airports around the country.
Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said that the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack.
