CHARLESTON, S.C. — It's a popular city in a state full of history that itself is in a country rich in cultural heritage. But one South Carolina landmark made a very short list - in no small part because of a renewed interest in examining a grim aspect of its past.
A regular on travel lists and guides, Charleston has been named a "Best of the World" travel destination by National Geographic in the category of culture.
And while Charleston is thick with history, NatGeo suggests a new museum coming in 2023 will examine "stories of tragedy and triumph" that have occurred over hundreds of years in this southern port.
The International African American Museum is set to open in Charleston on Jan. 21.
"The building is located on Gadsden’s Wharf and faces Charleston Harbor, where ships brought 100,000 enslaved Africans in chains to North America in the 18th and 19th centuries," the list states.
The museum and nine galleries intend to take a look at harrowing tales from plantation life while also highlighting the cultural impact of the Gullah Geechee people.
NatGeo adds that the museum hopes to connect Black Americans with their roots as well, with a Center for Family History dedicated to helping those interested find clues to the past through genealogical records.
Other entries in the cultural category include Appian Way, Italy, Busan, South Korea, Egypt, and Longmen Grottoes, Henan Province, China.
Other travel categories in the Best of the World list include adventure, nature, family, and community for 25 locations in total.
