Two South Carolina cities named friendliest in US

One of them took the top spot

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Condé Nast Traveler is finding out what South Carolina residents have known for some time - the Palmetto State has some of the friendliest cities.

In fact, in the travel site's list of 10 friendly cities across the United States, two were in South Carolina - and one of those took first place.

A neighbor to the north for Midlands residents, Conde Nast suggests Greenville is a city worth visiting.

Conde Nast Traveler reports that the city took the top rank on the friendliest city list and had a few theories about what keeps residents so chipper. Possible reasons: the cities "burgeoning farm-to-table food movement," a vibrant arts scene, or a decent selection of craft beer. The city was also recognized for its natural resources such as the 32-acre Falls Park and the Swamp Rabbit bike trail.

But, as we mentioned, the travel site suggested that this wasn't the only South Carolina city to make the list. In fact, the next one tends to make a few when it comes to travel destinations.

At fifth place, Charleston was described as a place of "full-on Southern hospitality at its finest."  With its historic setting and ever-growing culinary scene, residents have a few reasons to smile and welcome travelers. Short beach drives don't hurt either.

South Carolina was one of only two states on the list to be mentioned twice. Texas, with San Antonio (4th) and Austin (10th), was the only other to share that distinction.

The rankings come from the 34th annual Readers' Choice Awards survey that asked travelers questions about the places they've visited. So, it's nice to know that the title comes from real people.
