ELGIN, S.C. — The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed a 1.3 magnitude earthquake in near Elgin, South Carolina. The quake occurred around 11:31 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11.
This quake brings the total to 13 minor tremors that have been felt in the area since Dec. 27, 2021.
USGS places Tuesday evening's quake about 9K (5.6 miles) south southeast of Elgin at a depth of 5K (3 miles) at coordinates 34.092°N 80.761°W.
Also, USGS registered two small earthquakes Tuesday morning -- a 1.7 quake about 3 miles east of Elgin, and a 2.0 abut 3 miles south of Elgin.
The first earthquake reported in the area was a 3.3 magnitude quake that occurred at 2:18 in the afternoon of Tuesday, Dec. 27. It is believed this quake set off a swarm of smaller quakes in the area.
