ELGIN, S.C. — The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed two more early morning earthquake in the Lugoff - Elgin area on Jan. 5.
The first quake occurred at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday and initially registered as a 2.5 magnitude tremor. USGS reassessed the strength of the trembler and raised the magnitude to 2.6 around 6:45 a.m.
Then at 8:18 a.m., there was a 1.5 magnitude tremor.
The are the ninth and tenth earthquakes in the area since Dec. 27, 2021. That first quake, a 3.3 magnitude, set of a series of smaller earthquakes, creating a swarm.
Wednesday morning's first quake was centered 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) southwest of Lugoff, at a depth of 0.5 kilometers (1636.8 feet). The exact coordinates are 34.185°N 80.726°W.
The second was 7.0 kilometers (4.34 miles) below the surface about 4 miles away from Lugoff.
