And we're rollin' again: Magnitude 2.1 earthquake confirmed Wednesday morning near Elgin

It's the fifth minor earthquake reported in South Carolina since January 1, 2024

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Seems like the swarm may be returning. The US Geological Survey (USGS) has confirmed a magnitude 2.1 earthquake occurring around 1:46 a.m. March 27, about 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) east-southeast of Elgin.

This is the fifth minor earthquake recorded in the area since January 1, 2024. The strongest quake reported, so far, this year was a magnitude 2.7 about 3 miles east of Elgin on March 9.

The Lugoff-Elgin area has been the epicenter for a series of small earthquakes, what scientists call an earthquake swarm. The original swarm began around December 2022 and since then the area has had more than 100 earthquakes of varying magnitude.
