Charleston Highway reopens after flooding that left some cars stranded

Cayce Police ultimately shut down the entire highway near Memorial Drive to allow the roads to clear of storm water.

CAYCE, S.C. — Charleston Highway is back to normal after heavy rains flooded the road so badly on Sunday that police say cars ended up stalling on it.

Just before 3 p.m. on Sunday, the Cayce Department of Public Safety issued a warning to drivers on the highway near Memorial Drive. Motorists were told to find another route as officers shut down the entire roadway to keep more cars from ending up immobilized in the deluge.

One viewer, Bryan Sharpe, shared a video that showed just how bad the floodwaters were at one point. Even with water rising well up into the wheel-wells of some SUVs, several drivers are shown trying to continue forward on the highway - with varying amounts of success.

Cayce Police shared an update around 5:45 p.m. saying that all lanes had reopened.

The perilous moments on Charleston Highway came as a storm dumped several inches of rain on the area for hours at a time. The region experienced two flash flood warnings during the day and reports of more localized flooding in various areas around Columbia.
