COLUMBIA, S.C. — Our weather will be dry, sunny, and significantly warmer than usual, with high pressure under control. A cold front is expected to pass through on Tuesday, possibly bringing some showers and some of the season's coldest weather by Wednesday. On Wednesday night, some places might even experience their first freeze of the year, especially those northwest of I-20. It will start to warm up again as the weekend draws near.
High temperatures again today will be well above average. Temperatures are forecast to hit the middle to upper 80s this afternoon. The record high for today is 88°, set in 1984. The clouds will increase tonight as the cold front approaches the area.
Tuesday is going to be a day of big temperature changes. In the morning, a cold front will move in and begin to bring in some very cold weather. The challenge is figuring out how warm it will get in the southern part of the area before the front arrives.
But in general, temperatures will be dropping through the day on Tuesday, with high temperatures being achieved in the morning. There is also a slight chance of rain in most of the Midlands, but any rain will be light. Any shower activity should be out of the area by the late afternoon or early evening hours.
Our in-house forecast model brings the rain to an end by 7 p.m. for the majority of the Midlands on Halloween.
On Wednesday and Wednesday night, even colder air is moving in as the front moves away and high pressure comes from the west. Daytime temperatures will be in the 50s, and it will be windy, making it dry with low humidity. This may increase the risk of fires.
Thursday morning, many places could see temperatures at or below freezing, with a high chance of subfreezing temperatures for areas in the northern Midlands. If you have outdoor plants, you will likely need to protect them from the cold.
Thursday will start to get a bit warmer, with highs in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. However, Thursday night, it will get quite chilly, with overnight temperatures dropping into the 30s. The wind will be calm, which means there is a good chance for a widespread frost.
As we head into the weekend, temperatures will keep getting milder, bringing us closer to the usual, normal temperatures for this time of year.
