COLUMBIA, S.C. — As we move into the workweek, expect a mix of warmer temperatures and rain, followed by a return to colder weather by next weekend. Here's a breakdown of what to expect over the next several days:
Conditions are improving today as the cold air damming clears out, making way for much warmer temperatures. A high-pressure system that has been lingering in the region will gradually weaken. This will lead to a mix of partly to mostly cloudy skies in the western areas, while the southeast will enjoy mostly sunny skies.
Temperatures will vary depending on your location. The western Midlands and northern CSRA will see highs in the low 60s, while the far eastern Midlands and southern CSRA will reach around 70°F. However, moisture from the earlier cold air will stick around, leading to the possibility of fog later tonight, particularly from midnight through sunrise. Overnight lows will dip into the upper 40s to low 50s.
Expect temperatures to stay well above normal on Tuesday and Wednesday. After any lingering fog burns off on Tuesday morning, we'll experience the warmest day of the week. Highs are forecast to reach the low to mid 70s across the southern half of the area, while the northern counties may remain in the upper 60s due to lingering clouds.
Moisture will start to increase on Tuesday night, especially in the eastern parts of the area. This could bring clouds and a slight chance of rain on Wednesday. A weather system will be approaching, and although the forecast is still a bit uncertain, rain is most likely to affect the eastern half of the area later in the day. Despite this, temperatures will remain warm, with highs again in the low to mid 70s.
Wednesday night will bring a weak cold front, but it's expected to pass through with little to no rain. Lows will drop to the mid 40s to low 50s.
After Wednesday’s front passes, expect cooler and drier weather for the rest of the week. Thursday and Friday will see high pressure taking control, bringing dry conditions. Although temperatures will be near or slightly above normal, moisture levels will be low, making the air feel crisp and dry.
By Friday, a stronger cold front will approach, ushering in colder air for the weekend. Temperatures will drop significantly, especially on Saturday and Sunday, when well below normal temperatures are expected. This cold air will stick around through the weekend, bringing a chilly end to the year.
