COLUMBIA, S.C. — You may be used to the 12-month calendar, meteorologists take this and bundle them up into 4 equal seasons for climate record keeping. These Seasons match the changes of weather closer than traditional seasons. Climatological Summer just ended here in the Midlands.
Our Summer was cooler than previous years ranking as the 37th warmest on record. Much of our Summer featured stormy and humid weather which kept temperatures down.
Even with a cooler summer currently, the Midlands are on track for the 11th warmest year. The main reason for this was the extremely warm Winter and Spring that we saw which heavily outweighs the cooler stretch we saw over the past few months.
Our hottest days were 101 degrees which broke daily records but on June 10th we started the day at a chilly 53 degrees in Columbia.
September through November is Climatological Fall and temperatures trend downward in a hurry during this period. Our average last 90 degree day typically falls around September 22nd. During the next 3 months our average high goes from a hot 91.9 degrees to a cool and crisp 63.9 by the beginning of December.
The Climate Prediction Center says the worst of our Summer heat may be long gone this time next week as cooler weather is expected for the next few weeks which will result in highs in the 80s.
This should come with a wetter than normal stretch that could result in some rainy days going through the middle of the month.
