COLUMBIA, S.C. — There are three main types of flood warnings: Areal Flood Warning, River Flood Warning, and Flash Flood Warning. Knowing the different types of flood warnings and what they mean can help keep you and your family safe.
Type 1: An Areal Flood Warning is issued when flooding is imminent or already occurring in a low lying area, such as a neighborhood or urban area.
Type 2: A River Flood Warning is issued when the level of a river or stream is expected to exceed its banks and cause flooding in the surrounding area. This type of flood warning is usually caused by prolonged rainfall.
Type 3: A Flash Flood Warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or already occurring. This type of flood can occur quickly and without much warning.
As always, stay informed and stay prepared.
