Very dry weather can fuel potential wildfires. Here's how to protect your home

The weather has been dry in the Midlands lately, creating potentially hazardous fire conditions.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The 2016 Pinnacle Mountain Fire was one of the largest wildfires in South Carolina history. The historic fire was started by an escaped campfire, and it eventually consumed more than 10,000 acres of forestland, the South Carolina Forestry Commission reports.

The combination of low humidity, strong winds, and fallen leaves created ideal wildfire conditions. It's essential to take proactive measures to protect homes and communities.

The National Fire Protection Agency lists the first tip as creating a defensible space. Leaves, dead vegetation, and low-hanging branches should be removed to create a safety zone. Wind can carry embers from wildfires, and these are vulnerable spots where fires can ignite.
