NEWBERRY, S.C. — Authorities say winds brought trees down and even led to an injury in Newberry on Friday night.
A spokesperson for the City of Newberry Fire Department said that crews were first called to a tree down in the town limits around 8:30 p.m. on Pauline Street where they found a tree that had fallen on a home.
Inside a heavily damaged back bedroom, officials said firefighters found an elderly woman who had been pinned in her bed by the fallen tree. Crews were able to free her within minutes and she was taken from the scene for treatment of unknown injuries.
Authorities said that the American Red Cross has since been called in to help those who live at the heavily damaged home
Not far away and within an hour of that call, crews were also dispatched to a home on Bess Street where a dead tree had fallen and caused minor damage to another home. However, no one was injured and the resident didn't need any additional help.
Newberry's calls were just a couple of those reported to the National Weather Service overnight that was tied to thunderstorms and strong winds.
