COLUMBIA, South Carolina — Saturday, Sept. 23, is the official start of fall.
First up is the transformation of our landscape as the leaves begin to change. In the Midlands, we see the typical peak of fall foliage between early and mid-November.
While South Carolina enjoys relatively mild fall temperatures, we are no strangers to chilly nights and frosty mornings. Gardeners may want to start thinking about protecting outdoor plants from the impending cold snap. The first freeze typically occurs in the Midlands region in early November.
Hurricane season can still be active in the fall. We've seen storms form in October and even November. In fact, August 20 through October 10 is historically the most active part of hurricane season. As we progress deeper into autumn, the likelihood of hurricanes weakens.
