Famously hot heat is here again

This weekend, the Midlands will see a rise in temperatures. Meteorologists are forecasting hot and sunny weather, which could affect those vulnerable to heat illness

COLUMBIA, S.C. — This time last year, observed high temperatures were in the mid to upper 80s. A little bit below average as the normal high temperature for the second week of June in the Midlands is between 89-90 degrees.

This weekend, we are gearing up for a hot weekend with forecasted temperatures in the mid 90s. Even though heat index values will not reach heat index criteria, they will be high enough to warrant caution.

As of May 1st this year, the National Weather Service office in Columbia implemented new heat advisory and excessive heat watch/warning criteria. The new criteria are as follows:

  • Heat Advisory: Heat index of 108-112 for at least 2 hours or more.

  • Excessive Heat Watch/Warning: Heat index of 113 or higher for at least 2 hours or more.

This weekend, local authorities are urging those spending time outdoors to take frequent breaks and hydrate well. The US Natural Hazards statistics show nationwide, heat has been the leading cause of weather-related fatalities.
