Heavy rains flood intersection in Columbia

Heavy rains led to high waters in some parts of the Midlands.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Heavy rains moving through the Midlands led to isolated areas of flash flooding in parts of the Columbia area Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning from Cayce to Columbia to Forest Acres but that has since expired.

One of the areas of concern was over at the intersection of Main and Whaley Street where Rocky Branch Creek flows near the University of South Carolina campus. At one point the creek went from normal levels to flowing out in the street in about five minutes.

The Columbia Fire Department confirmed one person driving a car got stuck in the floodwaters but was able to get out safely.

Radar indicates that area received about 1.5 inches of rain in 20 minutes, exceeding that area's capacity to runoff water. That's the same area that saw heavy flooding from a freak rainstorm back on July 4th that led to an all-time record high level for Rocky Branch.

By 6 p.m., however, the waters had receded.

There were also reports of ponding on the roadway in other parts of the city Monday.

The storms began moving through the area around 4 p.m. Monday and quickly started dropping heavy rain in the area.
