Flooding rain a concern for this weekend

Tropical moisture will move into the region over the coming day setting up the threat of heavy rain.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — After seeing quite a bit of rainfall on Wednesday things look to be drier on Thursday with only an isolated chance of rain in the Midlands. Temperatures will be kept down into the lower 80s thanks to increased cloud cover and a light wind from the north and east.

As we move into Friday and this weekend, rain chances look to jump up quite a bit with the chance of some heavy rain in the forecast.

As of Thursday morning, the Weather Prediction Center has included a slight risk of excessive rainfall on both Friday and Saturday here in the Midlands. That means that flooding looks to be possible especially, wherever we see higher rainfall totals.

Let's talk about the setup. A stalled front will be sitting along the Gulf Coast will help spawn an are of low pressure. Thanks to high pressure to our north, this system looks to sit along the coast and send multiple waves of precipitation our way over the coming days.

As of right now, timing for the heaviest rain looks to be on Saturday where we could see rain in the morning and afternoon hours. Models have been outputting around 1-3" of rain. As of right now, that seems like a pretty likely outcome with the possibility of higher amounts locally where we see thunderstorms develop.

That would be the biggest concern when it comes to the potential of flash flooding in the area.

Storms will stay in the forecast likely through Tuesday before we see a cold front move through that will eventually dry us out.
