Heavy rains leads to flooded roads all across Batesburg-Leesville

Several vehicles stalled in the rising waters. One restaurant parking lot had reports of water up to the grills of cars.

BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, S.C. — Heavy rain led to flooded streets--and even water into homes-- in Batesburg-Leesville after torrential rains moved through the region Thursday afternoon into Friday morning.

According to Town Manager Teddy Luckadoo, a restaurant parking lot in town and several roads were flooded. In the case of the restaurant, the water was up to the grills of some cars, he said.

According to Police Chief Darren Amick, several vehicles had stalled due to encountering some water. He also mentioned that there were flooding concerns in several areas, such as Highland Avenue, Terrace Way, and Hall, Liberty, Mitchell, and Peachtree streets.

The National Weather Service, citing city officials, also reported the closure of Town Pond Road and water flowing into homes along the road. According to the weather service, law enforcement also said the closure of Edisto Street due to a nearby pond overflowing.

Amick said that the South Carolina Department of Transportation assisted with storm drain issues in some areas.

The heavy rain was caused by a low pressure system in the southeast that was bringing in moisture to the region. Days of such rain have caused the ground to become saturated, leading to an increased threat of flooding when more rain comes through the area.
