Freeze warning in effect tonight

Most of South Carolina will experience the first freeze of the season Thursday morning.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — All Midlands counties are under a freeze warning tonight until early Thursday morning. The National Weather Service issues these warnings during the growing season, when temperatures are predicted to drop below freezing. This time, sub-freezing temperatures as low as the upper 20s are expected on Thursday morning.

It is essential to protect any tender plants from the cold, as frost and freezing conditions can have a devastating effect on crops and other sensitive vegetation. Take preventive measures to keep any outdoor plumbing from freezing and possibly bursting. Wrapping, draining, or allowing pipes to drip slowly can prevent freezing. If you have an in-ground sprinkler system, make sure to drain it and cover any above-ground pipes.

The average first freeze for Columbia is November 10. Last year, we had our first freeze on November 17. The latest first freeze on record was December 30, 1921. The earliest first freeze on record is October 4, 1974.

This afternoon, despite lots of sunshine, temperatures will be in the lower to middle 50s. Expect breezy conditions with winds from the north at 10–15 mph. Tonight will be clear and cold, and a few isolated areas may experience a "hard freeze" below 28 degrees.

Thursday afternoon will see a slight warming trend, with highs in the upper 50s and plenty of sunshine. Another freeze or frost will be possible late Thursday and early Friday. Friday afternoon, temperatures will begin to moderate into the middle 60s under sunny skies.

The first weekend of November 2023 will be mainly sunny and seasonable, with highs in the lower to middle 70s. The chance for some rain may return to the Midlands next week.
