Helene drenches South Carolina, prompting numerous river flood warnings

Helene brought heavy rainfall to South Carolina. Some areas across the state saw 10-12" of rainfall. This has prompted numerous river flood warnings into next week.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Helene brought heavy rainfall across the state of South Carolina as the system pushed toward the northwest.

Across the Upstate were some of the highest rainfall totals in South Carolina. Based on radar estimates over the last 48 hours, parts of Greenville County received around 20.00" of rainfall, the Edgefield area received around 13.00" of rainfall, areas across Oconee and Pickens Counties saw between 10"-12" inches of rainfall, parts of Anderson County received around 11", areas in Spartanburg County received 8"-10", and many in Laurens County saw 7"-10".

A band of heavy rainfall also led to significant rainfall totals in the Midlands. Areas across Bamberg, Western Orangeburg, Western Calhoun, and Lower Richland Counties received anywhere from 8"-10" of rainfall.

Numerous lakes, rivers, and streams across the state are at increased levels due to excess amounts of run-off.

The Wateree River at Lake Wateree Dam reached moderate flood stage Friday afternoon. This area of the river is forecast to reach major flood stage with near record levels of close to 107' on Saturday.

The Congaree River at Carolina Eastern reached moderate flood stage Friday afternoon. This part of the Congaree River is forecast to reach major flood stage at 126' Sunday night.

The Saluda River at Chappells also reached moderate flood stage Friday afternoon. This part of the river is also forecast to reach major flood stage at 26.40'.

  • A flood warning is in effect until Tuesday 12:35 PM for the Enoree River at Whitmire in Newberry and Union Counties
  • A flood warning is in effect until Tuesday 6:00 AM for the Saluda River at Chappells in Greenwood, Newberry, and Saluda Counties
  • A flood warning is in effect until Tuesday 7:08 AM for the Savannah River at Augusta in Aiken and Richmond (GA) Counties
  • A flood warning is in effect until Wednesday 6:48 AM for the Congaree River at Columbia in Lexington and Richland Counties
  • A flood warning is in effect until Monday 11:03 AM for the Congaree Ricer at Carolina Eastman in Calhoun, Lexington, and Richland Counties
  • A flood warning is in effect until Monday 11:03 AM for the Congaree River at Congaree National Park near Gadsden in Calhoun and Richland Counties
  • A flood warning is in effect until Monday 11:03 AM for the Wateree River at Lake Wateree in Fairfield, Kershaw, and Lancaster Counties.
  • A river flood warning is in effect until Monday 11:03 AM for Wateree River near Camden in Kershaw County.
