BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, S.C. — State workers continue to clear a significant road in Batesburg-Leesville following floods that occurred on Thursday night.
A low-pressure system caused heavy rain in the southeast region on Thursday, saturating the ground and increasing the risk of flooding.
On Friday, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) announced that cleanup crews are still working to clear Highway 1 on the Leesville side of town.
The section of road saw some of the heaviest flooding in the town on Thursday evening as rain inundated the area. SCDOT said that its crews worked throughout the night and would continue to work during the day. However, plans to reopen the road will only be made once the water recedes and crews can determine if it is safe.
In the meantime, the state agency is asking drivers to avoid the area and drive safely along wet roads. Most importantly, SCDOT urged motorists not to go through a flooded roadway.
Other roads and at least one restaurant parking lot also flooded, and photos showed high-standing water in an apartment complex and outside a local church.
Emergency crews also responded to cars stalling in the rising water and at least one vehicle that had washed off the road entirely.
