How the jet stream can affect your travel time

The jet stream is not just a term our News19 meteorologists use, it is also crucial to airplane travel time.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The jet stream is a narrow current of high-altitude air, and it doesn't just affect the weather. In the same direction as the jet stream, an airplane can gain extra speed.

For example, when a plane flies in the direction of the eastbound jet stream, it can ride the winds, covering more distance in less time. This is why flights from west to east often experience shorter travel times compared to the return journey.

On the flip side, flights that go against the jet stream may experience longer travel times and, in some cases, increased fuel consumption.

In the coming weeks, pop star Taylor Swift will likely leverage the jet stream's boost on a journey from her Japan tour finale to catch the Super Bowl in Las Vegas.

As a reminder, you can watch Super Bowl LVIII here on WLTX on February 11th.
