COLUMBIA, S.C. — Beryl is the second named storm of the season after Tropical Storm Alberto. On Saturday, Tropical Storm Beryl strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane.
By Sunday, Beryl strengthened to a major Category 4 hurricane. A major hurricane is considered a Category 3 or higher. Beryl is expected to remain a dangerous Category 4 storm when it reaches the Windward Islands Sunday night to Monday.
This is a very dangerous situation. According to the National Hurricane Center, potentially catastrophic hurricane-force winds, life-threatening storm surge and damaging waves are expected when Beryl passes over portions of the Windward Islands. Hurricane warnings are in place for much of the area. The highest risks are currently in St. Vincent and Grenada.
Another tropical system follows behind Hurricane Beryl, with a high chance of development in the next seven days. A tropical depression will likely form by mid-week.
The action doesn't stop there.
Tropical Depression Three formed in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Heavy rainfall is expected across Eastern Mexico.
