Record-high forecast for hurricane season released, NOAA says

'The forecast for named storms, hurricanes and major hurricanes is the highest NOAA has ever issued for the May outlook,' NOAA's Dr. Rick Spinrad said.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — On Thursday, May 23, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its 2024 Atlantic hurricane outlook

NOAA expects an above-normal hurricane season, with between 17 and 25 named storms. Eight to 13 could become hurricanes, and four to seven could become major hurricanes. NOAA forecasters have a 70% confidence level in these ranges.

"The forecast for named storms, hurricanes and major hurricanes is the highest NOAA has ever issued for the May outlook," NOAA Administrator Dr. Rick Spinrad said at the press conference.

NOAA's forecast is based on a combination of factors, including warm ocean temperatures, the transition from El Nino to La Nina, and even trade winds.

This outlook makes preparation even more crucial.

"Severe weather and emergencies can happen at any moment, which is why individuals and communities need to be prepared today," FEMA Deputy Administrator Erik A. Hooks said at the press conference.

Hurricane season officially begins on June 1.
