Weather records on Midlands' leap days

While the forecast Thursday is relatively calm, leap days haven't always been so predictable.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Leap Day only occurs once every four years, but it can bring a variety of weather conditions. This Thursday is the latest Leap Day since 2020.

In the past, the Midlands have experienced a range of weather on leap days. In 1968, residents were surprised by a trace of snowfall. Just four years later, in 1972, temperatures skyrocketed to a record-breaking 81 degrees.

While some leap days may bring calm conditions, others can surprise us with unexpected storms or temperature extremes— or a cooler-than-average Leap Day in 2024.

From sunshine to snowflakes, the Midlands has seen it all on leap days past.
