Magnitude 1.4 earthquake rumbles Midlands early Monday morning

Small quake centered in Fairfield County, just north of Winnsboro

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — Another small earthquake rumbled through the Midlands early Monday morning.

The US Geological Survey confirmed a magnitude 1.4 earthquake centered about 8 miles (13 kilometers) NNE of Winnsboro, in Fairfield County, occurred at 6:33 a.m.

As of 10 a.m., there has been only one person reporting have felt the earthquake at the USGS site. No damage has been reported.

The last earthquake reported in the Midlands was on February 28 when a magnitude 1.3 quake occurred just east of Elgin. That quake might be considered part of the "Elgin swarm" that began in December 2021 and has registered over 70 small earthquakes to date.
