COLUMBIA, S.C. — A warm southwesterly airflow is expected across our region today. However, a fast-moving trough will move into the area on Tuesday, increasing the likelihood of showers and thunderstorms. As the week progresses, high pressure will develop, with little chance for rain Wednesday through Friday. Temperatures will rise above average during this time. Towards the weekend, the chances of rain are set to increase once again.
The weekend was mostly cloudy and cooler than normal. Highs were in the middle to upper 70s both Saturday and Sunday. A few areas got some rain Saturday. The Columbia airport received 0.02” of rain Saturday. The next best chance for rain is Tuesday afternoon.
Today will be mainly sunny and seasonably warm. High temperatures will top out in the lower 80s for daytime highs. Tonight will be mostly clear and mild, with low temperatures in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees.
The moisture will increase Tuesday ahead of trough. Showers and storms are expected to develop in the afternoon hours. Our in-house forecast model brings rain to the eastern Midlands by 5 p.m. The showers and storms will move from west to east through the afternoon and evening. By midnight, any rain should be out of the Midlands.
The chance of severe weather is low on Tuesday, and if any severe storms were to develop, they would be isolated in nature. High temperatures will be in the lower 80s Tuesday afternoon.
Drier air will move into the area on Wednesday. There is only a small chance of a shower or storm in the southern and eastern parts of the Midlands.
Temperatures will be warming up into the upper 80s to near 90 degrees on Thursday and Friday. The chance of rain returns to the Midlands over the weekend.
