COLUMBIA, S.C. — The first part of the week will see temperatures that are close to normal. There are chances for light rain late tonight into Tuesday, with a colder air mass settling over the area midweek. By the end of the week, temperatures start to moderate before a strong cold front brings in a significantly colder air mass for the weekend.
The weekend was dry and pleasant. Temperatures both Saturday and Sunday hit the upper 50s to near 60 degrees on Sunday. This morning, lows were generally in the middle to upper 30s under partly cloudy conditions. Even with the clouds in place and wintry weather towards our west and northwest, temperatures will be mild today. Look for highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s.
Some light rain is expected Tuesday as a cold front approaches South Carolina. Showers will develop early Tuesday and may continue until the mid-afternoon hours of the day. High temperatures on Tuesday will be in the middle 50s.
Cold air will swiftly advance into the state behind the cold front. Low temperatures Wednesday morning are forecast to drop into the mid-20s. It will be even colder in those traditionally cooler spots around the area.
Even with plenty of sunshine on Wednesday, our high temperatures will be well below average due to a modified Arctic air mass across the South. Highs will be in the lower to middle 40s during the day. Low temperatures Wednesday night into Thursday morning may drop into the lower 20s. Some sheltered spots could drop into the teens.
It will be a little warmer on Thursday and Friday. Some rain will be possible on Friday as another cold front approaches the area.
It is going to be unusually cold this weekend, possibly the coldest of the season so far. High temperatures will struggle into the lower 40s on Saturday and Sunday. Lows will be in the lower 20s and maybe even the upper teens.
