COLUMBIA, S.C. — NOAA's newest forest model is the “Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System,” or HAFS.
HAFS is predicting rapid intensification. This importance of prediction will help the risk of fatalities, injuries, and property damage.
According to the press release, last year's experimental version of HAFS was still the first model to accurately predict that Hurricane Ian would undergo secondary rapid intensification with wind speeds increasing by 35 miles per hour in 24 hours. Earlier predictions allow more time for storm preparations.
One of HAFS’ most innovative features is its "moving nest." This feature enables zooming in on storms, leading to improved predictions of wind speeds and precipitation.
Enhanced accuracy can only help reduce impacts on lives and property during this hurricane season
