Tropical Storm Debby moves into Calhoun County

County officials said residents should use caution on the roads as many are close to being covered with water.

Calhoun County faced hundreds of power outages, streets filled with water, and strong wind gusts in the path of Tropical Storm Debbie today.

County officials said residents should use caution on the roads as many are close to being covered with water.

“Be observant in case there’s trees across the road. Especially at night during the day you can see these things at night it’ll creep up on you. So I'd just say drive cautiously, drive slower, and just be observant," said Calhoun County Sheriff Thomas Summers.

The county did not open any shelters, citing that they aren't anticipating a severe enough impact from the storm to warrant it.  Officials say if anyone feels they need to go to a shelter, go to the Orangeburg Shelter.

There were also over 300 power outages facing the county, according to poweroutage.us

It's not uncommon in that area, says Director of the Emergency Management Agency David Chojnacki.

"During the 2015 ice storms we had power outages all over the place," said Chojnacki. "They should notify their power provider immediately if they see a power line down do go anywhere near it. They should keep everyone else away, people pets children, of course. And just monitor the situation."

He also encouraged residents to stay in the know in case of potential downed trees or closed roads, by signing up for the Calhoun Code Red Alert system online.

“It's location based so I can send out a notification pretty much down to the house if I needed to," said Chojnacki.
