Tornado Touched Down in Calhoun County, Weather Service Says

The weather service said Tuesday their preliminary rating is that an EF-0 came down near the town of Cameron.

Calhoun County, SC (WLTX) - The National Weather Service confirms a weak tornado did touch down in Calhoun County Monday.

The weather service said Tuesday their preliminary rating is that an EF-0 came down near the town of Cameron. An EF-0 is the lowest rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which measures tornado intensity.

Winds were estimated at approximately 80 miles an hour. The tornado was about 150 yards wide and moved along a path that was only a third of a mile long.

EF0s are typically not life-threatening, but they can cause some minor property damage.

Doppler radar picked up on an area of weak circulation just after 3 p.m. Monday near the town of Cameron.

There was a report to law enforcement that shingles were taken off of a roof.

The weather service says they'll have additional information about the storm's intensity and the exact path later on Tuesday when they finish their site survey.

The storms and showers in the Midlands were caused by Subtropical Storm Alberto, which came ashore in the panhandle of Florida hundreds of miles away. The system is expected to push into Alabama over the next day.
